Umayyad Open Cistern is a remarkable ancient water reservoir located within Amman’s historic castle grounds. Dating back to the 8th century, this massive circular structure was ingeniously designed to collect and store rainwater for palace use. Visitors are captivated by its impressive size, waterproof plaster lining, and the central measuring pole, which highlight the advanced engineering of the Umayyad era. Thoughtfully restored, this point of interest offers a striking window into Jordan’s rich archaeological heritage.

7 months agoThis is an impressive structure that has been restored sympathetically. Essentially it's a massive cylinder designed to collect rain water for the palace. But what's striking is its size and heft for it has clearly been designed to endure. Unfortunately you cannot proceed down the steps to the interior but that's probably for the best.
